Lori and Frank Beauchamp.

The welcoming expanse features warm-white cohesive cabinetry that hugs the appliances and range hood for a clean look, as well as light countertops, while the space is grounded by a richly hued island base, flooring, a recessed tray ceiling, and columnar entry trim. The wood detailing imparts a luxurious but never heavy feeling; its natural essence conveys a comforting mountain aesthetic.

The process of designing the Beauchamps’ kitchen — newly built in Champion Hills — coalesced as naturally as its light/dark look, according to kitchen designer Stephanie Walden of Kitchens of the South in Hendersonville. Walden credits Lori’s eye for aesthetics but also notes that it’s just as crucial to learn how homeowners want to use their kitchen — not just how they want it to look. “[The couple] were great communicators,” she says.

“We dreamed of a cook’s kitchen — one that would accommodate baking with our three-year-old granddaughter while also allowing up to prepare meals at the gas cooktop,” says Lori.

Small but important functional details come into play: the heights of the owners, for instance, and whether they’re right- or left-handed.

“These facts inform how we’ll design the cabinets, decide on countertop height, and our approach to storage in the kitchen,” Walden shares. In the Beauchamps’ case, Walden prioritized installing a utensil pullout next to the range for ease and clutter reduction. “We also added 18-inch-wide pantries to the left and the right of the fridge that are 24 inches deep, so they’re quite roomy,” she says.

Since the Beauchamps have a big family and enjoy entertaining, Walden made sure to include lots of seating both inside the kitchen and right outside it, in a nearby bar area. That banquette, says Lori, “creates a welcoming space for conversation.”

“They wanted to keep the space comfortable and homey, with a relaxed vibe for gathering,” says Walden. Features like tall ceilings and an expansive opening to the kitchen keep things airy.

Luxe, understated materials and finishes lend a striking sophistication. The dramatic island base is cherry wood treated with a slate stain and topped with a cherry glaze, while the sturdy Fieldstone cabinets are constructed with maple. “We ultimately painted the cabinets a light mushroom color,” notes Walden, “but I ended up bringing lots of samples to the kitchen because you can’t get a true idea of color in a showroom. Lori, Frank, and I needed to see how the color changed with the light during the day and evening.”

That “rich color,” says Lori, “offers depth — but without being too dark for cozy winter evenings.”

The couple and Walden introduced some contrast with the island top, choosing a dramatic “Cambria Brittanica” gold quartz slab as a focal point. For continuity, they also used it in the bar area. Directly above the island is the rich wood tray ceiling, from which two minimalistic angular globe pendants float with seeming weightlessness. “I tend to do lots of under-cabinet lighting as well,” says Walden, who offers an insider’s tip: “I always recommend that bright-white lightbulbs be used in kitchens. Daylight bulbs are blue [toned] and soft white is yellow — bright white is more natural and provides the truest ability to see a kitchen space.”

The trio chose polished nickel for finishes such as cabinet pulls and faucet hardware. “It has more of that attention-grabbing sparkle,” says Walden, “whereas chrome is too gray and flat — there’s no warmth or luxury to it.” Lori describes the polished-nickel hardware as “our kitchen’s jewelry.”

The Beauchamp kitchen is designed to stand the test of time in its durability, but also delight with its beauty. The space is a testament to the importance of careful color selection, thoughtful lighting design, an understanding of how design elements and materials play off of each other.

Walden reflects warmly on working with the Beauchamps, declaring it a dream project. “Lori and I worked closely together to coordinate colors and style concepts. She has such good taste and an intelligent mind, it was a breeze and a joy to work with her and Frank.

“This is one of my all time favorite projects, not just because of its beauty, but because of the collaboration and intention that went into curating the design details and flow.”

          •	Concealed Kitchens: A major trend is hiding appliances and clutter behind flush cabinetry and integrated solutions. This creates a sleek, minimalist aesthetic, especially beneficial for open-concept living spaces, making the kitchen blend seamlessly with other areas.

          •	Multipurpose Kitchen Islands: Islands are evolving into central hubs with built-in sinks, cooktops, power outlets, and ample storage. They serve not only for meal prep and dining but also for work or homework, enhancing functionality and gathering space.

          •	Natural Light & Views: Maximizing natural light through large windows, skylights, and glass doors is a top priority. This creates bright, airy spaces and fosters a connection to the outdoors, improving mood and well-being.

          •	Personalized Spaces: Homeowners are opting for custom cabinetry, tailored storage, and bespoke details that reflect their unique tastes and lifestyles, making kitchens truly authentic expressions of personality.

          •	Sustainable Materials & Eco-Friendly Appliances: The focus on sustainability continues with the use of materials like bamboo, reclaimed wood, recycled glass, and stone finishes. Energy-efficient and smart appliances made from recycled materials are also gaining popularity.

Budgets are an integral parameter for any kitchen project, and designers work diligently within them when considering material selections and design elements for any kitchen renovation or new construction project. However, sometimes clients are willing to adjust those budgets, extending them to include certain aesthetic or functional items that are seen as important to the project.

Such was the case for these homeowners, who saw the value of allocating additional funds to include Polarstone’s Calacatta Vagli quartz as the island countertop for their new kitchen. The large island features an uninterrupted work surface for food prep and serving while an overhang allows for in-kitchen seating. Waterfall edges draw attention to the veining pattern and a 2.5″ folded mitered edge adds visual ‘heft.’

“The island material and thickened edge was over budget,” explains Jennifer Scott. “However, the homeowners understood the importance of the statement that it makes.”

For the perimeter, Cambria’s Devon quartz, configured with shades of gray and black, serves as a contrast and complement with its darker hue and more monochromatic design. Its matte finish offers distinction to the polished finish given to the Calacatta Vagli surface.

The design duo extended the quartz as the backsplash behind the range to provide a seamless aesthetic and create an easy-to-clean surface. It continues behind the sink and into an illuminated niche that offers additional workspace. As well, they featured it as the countertop in the adjacent dry bar and walk-in pantry where its non-porous composition offers stain resistance from spills.

“The countertop selections were created to marry the modern architecture articulated by the form of the home with the immortal elegance of a natural stone look,” says Scott. “The sleek, earth-tone perimeter and backsplash coupled with the timeless look of Calacatta marble for the island create a modern-meets-timeless design.”

That design theme is further supported by upper cabinetry that extends to the ceiling and is uniquely the same depth as the lower cabinets.

“It was a challenge to make sure all of the cabinetry was at the same depth, including the panels that extend to the ceiling, which at its highest point is 14′,” emphasizes Jarock. “As well,

we considered many stain colors and finally landed on this warm yet light, earthy tone that complements the countertop selections.”

Walnut cabinetry and European oak flooring make the kitchen warm and appealing, while the “Urbane Bronze” paint scheme, true to its name, is a neutral with a sophisticated edge. The striking modern pendant is by Lexington Glassworks.

The eponymous lass of “Goldilocks and The Three Bears” wanders into a woodland home to find three bowls of porridge. The first bowl is much too hot. The second is much too cold. But the third is “just right” — exactly how Debbie and Marc Cobb describe the kitchen of their new North Asheville home.

It’s less well known that “Goldilocks” is an English folktale, and in the Cobb kitchen, an appropriately woodsy palette, grounded by European French Oak flooring, echoes a bit of the story’s aesthetics as well as its universal theme of finding balance.

The Cobbs are Greensboro professionals who have spent more than three decades vacationing in the mountains. “We have been married 38 years and have been coming to Asheville for all that time,” says Debbie. “We just love the scenery.”

Intent on seeing more of it, the couple purchased a mountain lot. They then commissioned Dustin Penland with Milestone Contracting and April Gahagan-Fore, an interior designer with Furniture Specialties, to design a second residence that felt warm and inviting but also cool and modern.

“They wanted a Mountain Modern home that wasn’t cold and sterile,” Gahagan-Fore confirms. She anchored the motif with “Urbane Bronze” by Sherwin-Williams. Described as a gray-beige (or “greige”) that “evokes a down-to-earth tranquility and subtle sophistication,” the paint color became a jumping-off point for other selections, such as the gold faucets and that unique, wide-plank oak floor. “Everything works so well with the ‘Urbane Bronze,’” Debbie says. “It brings out the brown tones in the wood and blends with both greens and blues nicely. It’s such a beautiful color.”

To balance the rich neutral, which appears on frameless cabinets from Cuisine Idéale out of Canada, Maureen Jarock of Kitchens of the South incorporated a walnut range and trio of walnut-accent cabinets. The result is “playful and unexpected,” she says. “It was a creative way to pull off this warm, modern look.”

Walnut was also used for the island, which accommodates three chic Benton Stools by Four Hands. The L-shape makes the area a bit more comfy and personable, says Jarock. Meanwhile, the recessed walnut toe kick affords an ethereal lightness. “It’s a great place for conversation,” she notes.

Gahagan-Fore agrees, commending the island’s functional design. “[That] was important as these clients wanted to be able to provide a mountain oasis for their family to come and enjoy,” she explains.

For countertops, the island features “Fusion Crystal” — a quartzite with great swaths of vivid blues, greens, and browns. According to Debbie, who found the material, these colors nod to the dramatic vistas visible from the couple’s back deck. “It’s all about the views,” says the homeowner.

But the views don’t stop there. Above the island hangs a custom chandelier. Designed by Lexington Glassworks, the light fixture features hand-blown glass shades from the “Nesting” collection. With neutral colors and organic textures, the piece brings a “sense of airiness” to the space, says Ashleigh Hardes, marketing director of the hot shop.

“Lighting can be more than just a practicality,” she notes. “It can also be a work of art that enhances the look and feel of a room.”

Speaking of artwork, open shelving in the kitchen provides just enough space for Debbie to display vases she has collected over the years. (Her husband, Marc, prefers to collect wine, as illustrated by the generously sized wine cooler from Haywood Appliance.)

So as not to overpower these ornate touches, Debbie chose a rectangular porcelain tile from Crossville Studios for the backsplash and soft-brushed gold hardware from Top Knobs for the cabinets.

Put together, these selections are decidedly sleek and modern. But thanks to the warmth of the “Urbane Bronze” and the walnut accents, the space doesn’t feel too cold. It is, as Goldilocks might say, “just right.”

Unlike in the English folktale, no ursines occupy this North Asheville domicile. But Debbie has noticed a few rambling around outside.

“We love enjoying the cool mountain air and scenery,” she says. “And we really love watching bears from the kitchen windows.”

“Approaching the front door,” flanked by glass and topped by a clerestory, “you can see directly through the house into the forest beyond, giving you a taste of the view to come,” says architect Ben Settle. Linear pavers with a “serpentine outer edge” are visually in keeping with the sunken Zen garden on the home’s lower level.

“After some soul searching, we dismissed beaches and lakes,” says the owner of an artisanal modern residence in Madison County. Instead, during the time she and her husband were hunting for a site to launch their heritage homestead, “the mountains were calling.”

But not all water was forsworn. The ancient French Broad River at its most wild and scenic — between cliff banks 280 feet high — proved irresistible to the couple. “We wanted a place that would lure our children — and someday grandchildren — to visit: a special place for all future Thanksgivings, Christmases, and summer vacations,” says the homeowner, “and, simultaneously, a place versatile enough to house [us] in retirement.” Mountain beauty aside, “an inclusive culture and high-speed Internet for my husband’s tech career” were also important.

The private community contains walking trails, a pool, a river park with boating access, and a clubhouse: everything to keep a pair of discerning introverts close to home: “Perfect for us hermits,” says the homeowner. “And the neighbors are very welcoming.”

Such a mood aligns gracefully with the home’s aesthetics. “The word is warmth,” says designer Jennifer Scott of Tyner Construction, who chose the home’s interior architectural finishes and palette. Locally sourced Doggett Mountain stone, a bold textural element, makes up a massive two-story hearth and covers select walls. (The look was inspired by an old stone bridge nearby.) Custom birch kitchen cabinetry with panels reaching to the 22-foot ceiling is another inspired innovation.

Scott notes that many of today’s new builds feature bright-white interiors. This look imparts a blank-slate feel and reads clean and modern. However, it can also come off as sterile and cold. “We wanted to give the home life,” says the designer. Such a space, rich with atmosphere, “meant no white walls,” she emphasizes. She went with Benjamin-Moore’s earthy shade “River Reflections,” an aptly named choice.

Kayla Burris with Atelier Maison Co., a local business that specializes in sustainably sourced furnishings with non-toxic finishes, helped fulfill what she calls “a cozy yet sophisticated vibe.” In addition to all the home’s major furniture pieces and textiles, she picked out rugged-chic Taracea coffee tables and side tables.“They’re made from naturally fallen wood,” she adds. “These are unique works of art.”

The dream team that the homeowner calls “seamless” and “superlative” was shepherded by architect Ben Settle with Arcisan, Inc., in Greenville, SC, a firm guided by biophilic principles — respecting the ecology of a site while “promoting wellness through a direct connection with the natural environment,” as Settle describes it.

A series of staggered low-slope rooflines keeps the exterior lines clean and the horizon free: It’s hard to tell from a direct approach that the house has more than one level. Inside, floor-to-ceiling glazing embraces the span of the lush surrounding wilderness. “Opening the 15-foot-wide bifold doors onto the outdoor terrace literally removes the boundary between outdoor and indoor [environments], allowing fresh mountain air and the sounds of the river to permeate the interior,” says Settle.

Showing reverence for the region, he refers to the surrounding peaks by name. The home’s bird’s-eye view bends “upstream and downstream … wrapping around Slaty Knob,” the architect remarks. “You also catch a glimpse of the railroad tracks that wind along the northern bank. We knew that capturing as much of this view as possible would be paramount.”

The homeowners are enthusiastic collectors of local art, including canvases by abstract painter Linda Gritta, who’s represented by Bender Gallery. In its gold frame, “Pipevine Swallowtail II” — the title refers to a breed of butterfly — adds a vivid splash of color to the smoky-dark powder room. Gilt accents and a globe chandelier add an Art Nouveau vibe.

Design Services Manager Kayla Burris of Atelier Maison & Co. chose the Taracea side tables and Boden sofas from Robin Bruce, “which showcase deep charcoal velvet and a washed oak frame,” she says. “The ‘Atticus’ chairs, with their beautiful ‘Fontana Almond’ leather and angled metal frame, introduce an industrial touch to the great room.” The fireplace surround of regional stone is enhanced here by a floating concrete hearth by Ennis Art.

The rich, distinctive cabinetry array, with polished birch panels reaching all the way to the ceiling per a vision of the homeowners, was crafted by Kitchens of the South (the company’s owner is Kevin Smith). So pertinent is this structural element that designer Jennifer Scott calls the home “Birch River Retreat.” The gleaming quartz island is from Mountain Marble, brilliantly contrasted against a range hood of blackened steel (Production Welding & Fab).

The floating birch cabinetry by Kitchens of the South sustains the kitchen theme. Porcelain backsplash tile is from Crossville Studios. Ottoman sourced through Atelier Maison & Co. “Large Glulam timbers are present in many areas of the home, allowing for dramatic spans and cantilevers,” notes architect Ben Settle, principal of Arcisan, Inc. These deep overhangs protect the exterior from the rainy microclimates of the region, and retractable screens protect the inhabitants. Durable outdoor furniture, much of it in handcrafted aluminum (Atelier Maison & Co.), also creates a multi-season room. “The way we incorporated modern with ‘mountain’ — the somewhat rustic elements — makes a good balance,” says Jennifer Scott, architectural interior designer with Tyner Construction.

Local Doggett Mountain stone trims the exterior and interior of this modern estate; the surface was inspired by an old stone bridge on the nearby French Broad River. A roomy garage expands the sense of welcome. After moving around a lot, the owners now feel settled in a home that will lure their grown children and future grandchildren to visit — “a special place for [special occasions].”

The walnut cabinetry makes its appearance as the ventilation hood surround, which is comprised of three individual panels that make it easy to access the appliance should repairs ever be needed. As well, the wood serves as floating shelves and as accents in the open niches of the tall painted cabinetry, all of which are symmet-

The island, sized to be as large as possible while still offering adequate traffic flow around it, provides convenient in-kitchen seating for the homeowners and their guests, including their grandkids. As well, its uninterrupted surface serves as an expansive serving station for entertaining.

“She very much wanted the island to be a gathering place,” Jarock explains. “Our clients also like to have breakfast together in the morning, so seating at the island is important,” adds Gahagan. “And she likes to sit and talk to her husband while he cooks. It keeps her close to the action.” A custom light fixture from Lexington Glassworks floats above and offers illumination via its five hand-blown glass globes. “We wanted the decorative lighting to be

quiet, yet bring out the soft hues of the kitchen palette,” Gahagan relates. “The hand blown glass also supports a desire to highlight craftsmanship and natural components that don’t look quite so brand new.” To further support the natural vibe, Gahagan suggested the use of natural stone for the island top. “We knew we wanted to use a natural stone because we wanted to have a lot of movement throughout the house,” she explains. “We searched far and wide before finding this Crystal Fusion quartzite. It works well with the walnut, which also has a unique grain pattern. She loves how the intricacies of the veining of the quartzite work with the grain pattern of the wood. They play off of each other nicely. And the stone’s polished finish provides a contrast to the matte walnut.”

As a complement, the nearly solid white quartz perimeter countertops allow the quartzite to shine, as does the backsplash comprised of zellige tile from WOW in varying shades of white. Natural light flows into the space via an expansive wall of windows in the adjacent dining room, which also features a beam/tongue-and-groove ceiling that connects it to the walnut cabinetry in the kitchen. A pair of windows, trimmed in black, provide additional light in the kitchen. “The house itself is asymmetrical on the outside,” Gahagan relates. “In a traditional layout, the sink would be centered under a window. But in this kitchen, offsetting the sink gives a little play on the cabinets so it isn’t too expected or stuffy. It’s fun to be playful!”

The American Kitchen: A Culinary Journey Through Time

The American kitchen, much like the nation itself, has undergone a remarkable transformation over the centuries. From humble hearths to high-tech havens, its evolution reflects not just changing technologies and culinary trends, but also deeply ingrained societal values and cultural shifts. Today, let's embark on a delicious journey through the history of the American kitchen:

           Early Beginnings (17th-18th Centuries):

Fire and Function: Think simple, single-room structures with open fireplaces or brick ovens. Cooking was communal and labor-intensive, focused on basic sustenance. Food preservation relied on salting, smoking, and pickling.

Regional Influences: New England kitchens had Dutch and British influences, while the South adopted African and Caribbean traditions. Each region incorporated local ingredients and cooking methods.

           Victorian Transformation (19th Century):

Technology Takes Root: Cast iron stoves and iceboxes brought efficiency and convenience. Specialized rooms for cooking, laundry, and storage emerged.

Rise of Domesticity: The "cult of domesticity" emphasized women's role in managing the home, with the kitchen seen as a symbol of virtue and skill. Cookbooks proliferated, focusing on elaborate meals and proper etiquette.

The 20th Century: Efficiency and Convenience:

Modern Marvels: The 20th century saw a whirlwind of innovation: electric appliances (refrigerators, stoves, mixers), mass-produced food, and processed ingredients. Convenience became king, catering to busy lifestyles.

Shifting Roles: Women entered the workforce, leading to smaller, open-concept kitchens for multitasking. Formica countertops and linoleum floors offered easy cleaning.

           The Post-War Kitchen (1950s-1970s):

Suburban Dream: Suburban sprawl brought larger kitchens boasting built-in appliances, Formica countertops, and breakfast bars. Entertaining became a focus, with emphasis on presentation and convenience.

Microwave Mania: The 1970s saw the rise of the microwave, forever changing meal preparation and portion sizes. Kitchens became more casual and integrated with family spaces.

           The Modern Era (1980s-Present):

From Function to Form: Kitchens transformed into multi-functional spaces for cooking, dining, and socializing. Open floor plans became popular, blurring the lines between kitchen and living areas.

Focus on Personalization: Design trends shifted towards customization, reflecting individual styles and preferences. Sustainability, energy efficiency, and smart technology became buzzwords.

           Looking Ahead:

As we move forward, the American kitchen continues to evolve, shaped by:

Sustainability: Concerns for the environment will likely lead to eco-friendly materials, local sourcing, and reduced food waste.

Tech Integration: Smart appliances, voice-controlled systems, and AI-powered assistants will further automate and personalize the kitchen experience.

Health and Wellness: Focus on healthy eating and home cooking will likely influence kitchen design and appliance features.

Bold & Beautiful: Embrace Color with Confidence:

Step aside, all-white kitchens! 2024 is embracing a bolder color palette. Jewel tones like emerald green, rich burgundy, and deep teals are making a splash, adding depth and personality. Don't be afraid to go monochromatic for a dramatic statement, or mix and match for a playful vibe. Remember, pops of color through accent walls, cabinetry, or tiles can also make a big impact.

Texture Time: Tactile Delights Take Center Stage

Smooth is out, textured is in! This year, kitchens are getting cozy with natural materials like wood, stone, and brick. Think exposed brick walls, warm wooden countertops, and woven baskets for storage. This trend adds warmth, visual interest, and a touch of rustic charm to your culinary haven.

           Smart Kitchens: Technology Meets Convenience

The future is here, and it's integrated into your kitchen! Smart appliances are no longer a novelty, but a sought-after feature. From voice-controlled ovens to self-cleaning refrigerators, technology is streamlining meal prep and simplifying your life. Don't forget smart lighting and automated blinds for that extra touch of convenience and ambiance.

           Goodbye Hardware, Hello Handleless

is here to help every step of the way!

Step 1: Dream, Design, and Define:

Vision Board: Start by collecting images and ideas that represent your dream kitchen. What are your must-have features? Browse magazines, Pinterest boards, and home design websites to gather inspiration.

Functionality: Analyze your current kitchen layout and workflow. What works? What doesn't? Identify areas for improvement based on your cooking habits and needs.

Budgeting: Be realistic! Set a budget and stick to it as much as possible. Unexpected costs can arise, so plan for a 10-20% buffer. Consider financing options if needed.

Step 2: Assemble Your Team with KOTS Expertise:

Ask about warranties: Make sure that the company offers a warranty on their cabinets. This will protect you in case there are any problems with the cabinets down the road.

Shaker vs. Slab Cabinet Doors

Without a doubt, Shaker is the most popular, most versatile, and most enduring style of cabinet door in America. It is especially prevalent in the South, where tradition with a splash of creativity is always in style.

However, there are two basic cabinet styles readily available: Shaker and slab. Both are available at Kitchens of the South, but by far, the Shaker style is more popular and enduring.

Shaker Door Design
To understand the Shaker design, consider the “5-piece” rule. By definition, a Shaker-style door is constructed of five pieces of building material, usually wood. There are the recessed center panel, two vertical “stiles,” and two horizontal “rails.” The stiles and rails frame the center panel, which is normally recessed but it can be raised. This structural design is simple and strong, but it can be tweaked in many ways to add color, personality, and functionality to accommodate individual taste and needs. Don’t let the name “Shaker” fool you into thinking Shaker doors are strictly traditional

Don’t let the name “Shaker” fool you into thinking Shaker doors are strictly traditional. They have withstood the test of time and easily fit in with modern decor.

Slab cabinet doors take a very modern and minimalist approach to design. Each door is a single piece of building material (usually wood) that is made into the whole door. It is usually not adorned in any way. Rather, it is kept simple to the extreme. They are normally stained (if quality wood is used) or painted, which can lend itself to large spaces of color. For the person seeking a sleek no-frills look, slab doors should be a consideration. Still, most people want something a little more from their cabinet doors and invest in Shaker doors.

           Shaker Tradition

The roots of this style date back to the 1700s, when the Shakers, a Protestant denomination in New England, earned a reputation as craftsmen of high quality but simple furniture and cabinetry. The United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing (Shakers) was an offshoot of the Quakers. Most often this style was applied to cabinet doors with the stiles and rails being of equal width, framing the recessed center panel. However, the shaker design can also be applied to drawers, larger doors, and even some wall spaces when a little something-extra is called for.

           Styling Shaker Cabinet Doors

In its simplest application, the Shaker cabinet door is wood and either stained and sealed or painted. They can be overlayed framed (sitting on the face of the cabinet with some of the face showing around the edges) or overlayed frameless (sitting on the face of the cabinet with very little of the face showing around the edges) or inset (set flush into the cutout of the cabinet face).

The next best option besides using real wood is some type of processed material, such as Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF). Here you would probably paint these doors, rather than stain them. Doors made from MDF are usually less costly than real wood and are better at resisting moisture problems.

By adding color, hinges, door handles, and textures, plain and simple Shaker doors can find acceptance anywhere along the style spectrum, from deconstructive primitive (might even use repurposed wood) to post-modern. To get you thinking about all the possibilities, consider the following concepts…

Instead of a recessed flat panel, use glass that might be clear, colored and/or textured. How about beaded wood? How about a contrasting or complimenting color? Be sure to consider the room’s overall color palette.

Instead of the stiles and rails all being the same width, let the top rail arch a little or a lot.

Pulls, knobs, hinges. To see them, or not to see them? Metallic? Ceramic? Unobtrusive or big and bold? There’s an endless selection.

The Shaker style plays well with other styles. Don’t be afraid to mix and match.

Kitchens of the South Offer Only the Best in Cabinet Doors

If you are remodeling your kitchen or starting from scratch with a new home, one of the most important decisions to make is what type of cabinet doors you want. You’ll be opening and closing them for years to come, so you want to choose wisely. Kitchens of the South has hundreds of materials, colors and “styles” to choose from. It is important to take your time and look at all your options. Our staff will be glad to spend as much time as you need, showing samples and explaining the differences. Key to choosing your “style” is deciding how the doors will hang on the face of the cabinets.

Inset and Overlay Cabinet Door Styles

At Kitchens of the South, we carry and recommend the two more-popular and better-quality doors: Full Overlay (framed or frameless) and Framed Inset (with or without beaded edges). The third option is Partial Overlay or Standard doors, which Kitchens of the South does not carry. They are yesteryear’s bygone trend that tend to be of lesser quality and present an out-of-date look.

What is a Full Overlay Cabinet Door?

Full Overlay doors sit on the top of and cover nearly the entire face of the cabinet box. A Framed Full Overlay design allows only a quarter-inch to a half-inch of the cabinet box to be revealed between the doors and the edge of the cabinet box.

The Frameless Full Overlay design minimizes the amount of the cabinet box to be revealed, usually only about an eighth-inch. Generally, the Framed design is considered more traditional and is often referred to as the “American Style.”

The Frameless design gives a more contemporary and minimalist look, and is known as the “European Style.” The Frameless design also provides more interior storage space. However, the Frameless design requires very precise measuring and cutting, which can cost a little more and require more craftsmanship for installation.

What is a Framed Inset Cabinet Door?

Inset cabinet doors hang just inside of the cabinet box openings, producing a totally flushed finished surface. As a result of the doors being inset, they are Framed by the cabinet facing. There’s no such thing as a Frameless Inset design because the doors have to be inset into something. To add an extra touch of quality craftsmanship to your inset cabinets, consider the Beaded design, which is a decorative groove or edge cut close to the inside edges of the cabinet box openings. This design results in a “frame within a frame look,” almost like a very narrow accent matting surrounding a framed photograph.

You might choose door handles and standard hinges that will stand out on the doors’ surface. Or, you might choose concealed interior hinges, thereby allowing the cabinets to have a continuous smooth surface appearance.

The Framed Inset design creates a traditional and refined look. However, you will lose some of the interior storage space but not much. Framed Inset designs require very precise measurements and cuts, and therefore cost more.
